In November of 2000 the name Pilates was deemed a generic term by the courts. What this means is that there is very little regulation over what some may consider Pilates and that anyone can call what they teach ‘Pilates’ whether or not they uphold the standards and principles of the system. Health Clubs and Studios are popping up everywhere claiming to teach and certify teachers in the Pilates method.
Check that your teacher was certified by a Joseph Pilates successor (Romana Kryzanowska, Carola Trier, Kathy Grant, Lolita San Miguel, et. al.). Make sure they were taught by Joe Pilates to teach others and were not simply a client of his.
Check that your teacher has completed a bare minimum of 600 hours of training in the full Pilates system and not bits and pieces along the way.
Check that your teacher attends continuing education each year.
Learn about Joseph Pilates through his books (Return to life through Contrology & Your Health) and videos (www.pilates-marybowen.com/videos/video.html, www.classicalpilates.net) and compare your sessions against his true technique.
Make sure you are getting stretch, strength, cardio and control from your sessions.

Pilates changes bodies and changes lives.
